Bathroom Lighting – Selecting the Best Lights for Your Bathroom

Bathroom lighting is an important aspect of your home

Bathroom lighting is an important aspect of your home

As bathrooms become increasingly multi-functional, choosing the correct bathroom lighting is extremely important.  Lighting must be bright enough but also blend in with your home’s style.  Here are some great tips to help pick the best bathroom lighting for your home.

Bathroom Lighting with Small Mirrors

For bathrooms with smaller mirrors, consider placing a decorative wall sconce on each side of the mirror to provide even lighting for grooming and/or makeup.  Keep the fixtures at least 28″ apart and about 60″ off the floor.  For a more modern look, consider using mini-pendants instead of wall sconces.

Bathroom Lighting with Larger Mirrors

For bathroom lighting for bathrooms with large mirrors, use horizontal vanity lights.  The most elegant lighting solutions is achieved with the vanity light includes a shade for the bulb.  Mount the fixture 78″ off the floor.  Make sure the vanity itself isn’t wider than your mirror.

Bathroom Lighting for the Shower and Tub

For shower and tub areas, use recessed lighting.  Be sure to use wet-rated trims to keep water from getting inside your fixtures.  If you read in the tub, you may want to consider using a swing-arm lamp to provide extra illumination.

Bathroom Lighting for Night Time

A neat trick for nighttime lighting is to install undercabinet lights underneath vanities and cabinets. Putting these lights on a dimmer provides nice, soft illumination to make those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips safer.

Bathroom Lighting for Function and Decoration

Considering installing a bath exhaust fan but don’t like their plain look?  You don’t have to sacrifice style for function. Why not install a decorative bath fan and light combination from Hunter?  Not only do you get a bathroom exhaust fan from one of the premier fan makers in the country, but you get a beautiful fixture, as well.

General Bathroom Lighting

General bathroom lighting options include flush mounts, semi-flush mounts and mini chandeliers. Adding a central piece creates a great focal point and also balances out the brightness of your other bathroom lighting.
