For the first time ever the brightness of light bulbs will be expressed on the front of their packagings in lumens instead of watts. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that light bulbs wattage doesn’t measure its brightness. Wattage actually represents the amount of energy the light uses.

Much like a food nutritional label, these new light bulb packages also list the bulbs estimated energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance, and the mercury content. These aren’t the only changes we’ll be seeing in the lighting industry. Starting in January 2013 we’ll begin to see traditional incandescent light bulbs disappear from store shelves. By January 2014 incandescent bulbs will be a thing of the past. They’ll be taken over by the energy efficient CFL bulbs that have been crowding store shelves for several years now.

While some people are upset by the change from traditional incandescent bulbs, CFL bulbs come with many energy saving benefits. One standard incandescent bulb used 100 watts of energy, has a range of 1700 lumens, and a lifetime of 1,000 hours. One CFL light bulb uses 26 watts of energy, with the same range of lumens, and has a lifetime of around 8,000 hours!

You can learn more about these new light bulb regulations and other changes at LightingAndLocks.com.

If you’ve shopped for light bulbs within the New Year you may have noticed the new packaging and labels of incandescent, LED and compact fluorescent bulbs.
